Compositions (BOM)

Define a bill of materials — the materials and end products for a production batch — and link it to a workstation.

On this page 7

A composition is a bill of materials: the products consumed to make a batch, and the end products that come out of it. Production orders are raised against a composition.

Before you start

Production is not governed by permission groups. Any member of an organization with the Production module enabled can create, view, and edit compositions, and link a workstation to one.

The Compositions list

Open Production > Compositions (BOM).

Column Notes
Name The composition's name. Links to its profile.
Status Normally "-" — see Current limitations.

Sort defaults to the Name column, A–Z. The toolbar shows a Create icon.

Create a composition

  1. From the list, select the Create icon.
  2. Enter a Name.
  3. Optionally enter a Control model — free text, for example qtySub — and a Description.
  4. Under Materials, select a product and add it; repeat for each material, entering Qty and Qty sub for each and removing a row with its trash icon if needed.
  5. Under End products, do the same, plus a Material qty % for each.
  6. Select Create composition.
Field Required What to enter
Name Yes The composition's name.
Control model No Free text; there's no fixed list of choices, so enter this carefully — see Current limitations.
Description No Free text.
Materials No One row per material product, with Qty and Qty sub.
End products No One row per end product, with Qty, Qty sub, and Material qty %.

The composition profile

Shows the name, status, a Link workstation button, the linked Workstation (if any), Description (if set), a Materials table, and an End products table (Product, Qty, Qty sub — "No materials" / "No end products" if empty).

  1. From the composition's profile, select Link workstation.
  2. Choose a Workstation (pre-filled if one is already linked).
  3. Select Link workstation.

You see a toast reading "Workstation linked successfully" and are returned to the composition's profile.

Errors you may see

Message Why What to do
Check your records before submitting this form again. The composition failed to save — usually a missing Name. Check the highlighted field and try again.

Current limitations

  • There is no edit screen for compositions.
  • Control model is a free-text field with nothing checking it against a real value — a typo here won't be caught, and it affects how a production order raised against this composition behaves.
  • If a material or end product row's product can't be resolved when you save, it's stored without a product rather than showing you an error.
  • No status options are set up for compositions, so the Status column and field are normally blank.
  • There is no Delete control for compositions.
